Ma’ale Akrabbim
Southern Israel
This This Ignite the Truth teaching was filmed at Ma’ale Akrabbim (“The Ascent of Scorpions”) in southern Israel. This dramatic mountain pass connects the Arabah Valley, which forms a natural border between Israel and Jordan, with the central Negev Desert.
Today, a modern road winds its way up this steep ascent, closely following the path of ancient routes carved into the rock thousands of years ago by travelers, traders and armies. Roman and Nabatean roads once traversed this very landscape, carrying caravans along the famed Incense Route that linked Arabia with the Mediterranean world.
Ma’ale Akrabbim is not only a place of striking natural beauty and historical depth; it is also a biblical landmark. The ascent is mentioned multiple times in Scripture as part of the southern boundary of the Promised Land. In Numbers 34, God gives Israel precise and unmistakable instructions for the borders of their inheritance, naming the Ascent of Scorpions as a key marker: “Your border shall turn from the southern side of the Ascent of Akrabbim, continue to Zin, and be on the south of Kadesh Barnea…” (Num. 34:4).
Later, in the book of Joshua, this same boundary helps define the territory allotted to the tribe of Judah: “Then it went out to the southern side of the Ascent of Akrabbim, passed along to Zin, ascended to the south side of Kadesh Barnea…” (15:3). Even in Judges 1, after Israel’s partial conquest of the land, the ascent remains a recognized border point: “Now the boundary of the Amorites was from the Ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward” (1:36). These references anchor the biblical story to real geography and remind us that God’s promises were not vague ideals, but concrete declarations tied to actual places on the map.
This teaching reflects on Israel’s journey from wilderness wandering to standing at the threshold of the Promised Land. An entire generation had died in the desert because of unbelief, yet God remained faithful to His covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. From this vantage point overlooking the southern border, the message comes into sharp focus: God speaks with clarity, sets boundaries with purpose and fulfills what He declares.
The modern road climbing Ma’ale Akrabbim becomes a living picture of this truth. Just as today’s travelers follow pathways laid down long ago, so the Jewish people have walked a long, difficult road back to the Land God promised to their fathers.
Through empires, exiles and centuries of upheaval, the connection between the people of Israel and this land has endured. This site stands as a quiet testimony to the unchanging nature of God and the permanence of His word. Filmed on the edge of the desert, at the threshold of promise, this episode invites viewers to trust the faithfulness of God, who does not change, does not forget His covenant and always accomplishes what He has spoken.
